Canaria

bay mare, 1942

sire line: Krzyzyk (db)
dam line: Milordka (db, a Saklawiyah)

breeder: Janow Podlaski, PL

The bay mare Canaria was born at Janow Podlaski in 1942. She was a daugher by Trypolis.

Canaria
Her sire: Trypolis

Trypolis was born at Janow Podlaski. He was sired by Enwer Bey and was out of the Farys II daughter Kahira (x Zulejma).
In 1940, as a three years old, he became chief sire at Janow together with his stable mate the famous Witraz (Ofir x Makata). At Janow, Trypolis sired several important horses. Among them there was the flea-bitten grey Carmen (x Wilga), the dam of Comet.
A second Trypolis daughter that should be named here is Epizoda (x Pieszczota) whose granddaughter Eunice (Comet x Epigona) was a magnificient broodmare with world-wide influence. The bay mare was the dam of the full-sisters Eukaliptus, Euben and Euni (all by Bandos). The grey stallion Eukaliptus was a Polish chief sire and Polish National Champion Stallion in 1979. Euben was long time chief sire at the Ostenfelde Stud in Germany, while the mare Euni founded her own family in Australia.
Furthermore, Eunice was the dam of Eunizar (by El-Azrak) and Euros (by Etap), both exported to the USA.

Trypolis’ usage at Janow Podlaski ended shortly after World War II when he was given to Nowy Dwor in 1947. In the newly founded stud of Nowy Dwor he should help increasing the number of Arabian horse stock lost due to the war.

Her dam: Saga

Canaria’s dam was Saga, born at Janow Podlaski in 1936. The bay mare was sired by Hardy. Hardy was a successful race horse. He won the Polish derby with a record that last many years.
Her dam was Jaga II, a daughter by Koheilan I out of Bajka. Jaga II was also the dam of Wind (aka Wyrwidab) that later was chief sire at Marbach State stud, Germany.

Saga was given to Klemensów stud in 1948 where she was bred to Amurath Sahib multiple times. One result of that mating was a filly born in 1951 that would make the Polish Arabians to great international importance in modern breeding. Her name: Estokada.
All of the famous “E” named horses of Michalow stud traces back to her. The “E” family produced many Polish National Halter, International Halter and World Halter Champions, e.g. World Platinum Champion Mare Emandoria, World Champion Mare Emanda or Polish National Champion Mares Emanacja and Emisja.

Although Canaria was not so successful in producing show horses like her younger half-sister Estokada, still she was the dam of influental Polish breeding horses. In the following three of her descendents are presented in more detail.

Gwara

Canaria was a very fertile broodmare. She gave birth to 16 foals in 17 years! Among them there were four foals by Wielki Szlem (Ofir x Elegantka) and six foals by legendary Witraz (Ofir x Makata).
Already Canaria’s first foal was a mare of excellence, the bay Gwara (by Wielki Szlem).

Gwara was the dam of Gwarny, sire of Polish National Champ Stallions Argo (x Arba) and Balon (x Ballada). Gwarny was Polish chief sire at Michalow and Janow Podlaski where also sired excellent broodmares, most of them exported to the U.S.
Another of Gwara’s sons was Gerwazy (by Doktryner). This grey stallion was exported to England in 1950 where he sired the stallion Karadjordje (x Karramba), a top producer in the U.S. and Legion of Supreme Merit (+++) there. Furthermore, Gerwazy was the sire of Lalage, the dam of the famous Aladdinn (by Nureddinn).

Gwara also produced valuable broodmares. One of them was Genua (by Grand) who was exported as a three years old to Ed Tweed’s Brusally Ranch/USA in 1963 where she produced 14 registered foals.
Another daughter out of Gwara was Gawra, full-sister to Gerwazy. This chestnut mare was exported to the U.S. in 1961. For her owner James McBride she produced 9 registered foals (among them full-siblings Gazort and Czortina, both by Czortan) before she was sold to the famous Lasma Arabian Stud in Scottsdale, Arizona/USA. There she left seven foals that all bred on like the full-sisters True Love and Basks Delight (both by Bask).

Besides Gwara, Canaria was the dam of two full-brothers by Witraz that were important for the Arabian breeding program, one set his footprints in Poland while the second one became a chief sire at Marbach State Stud, Germany.
The older one of these full-brothers is Celebes.

Celebes

Celebes was a bay stallion, born in 1949 at Albigowa. He was the oldest of the 6 full-siblings resulting from the mating between Witraz and Canaria.
At first it didn’t look like he would ever become a sire, or even a chief sire of influence. Because in 1953 he was sold to Circus Knie that would own him for the next 14 years. It was only after that Circus career when he was reimported to Poland in 1967 where he was used at Michalow stud for one year before he was given to Janow Podlaski.

At Janow he remained the rest of his life siring important horses such as German Elite stallion Camerton (x Camerata) or full-siblings Algomej (Swedish National Champion Stallion in 1980) and Algeria (x Algonkina).
Latter one stood out from Celebes’ foals. This bay mare founded her own dynasty producing 18(!) registered foals, most of them influental breeding and halter horses, such as the Fawor daughters Albigowa and Albula (Polish National Champion Mare), the Probat full-siblings Almeria (Polish Reserve Junior Champion Mare), Algeria and Alegro (Polish Reserve Champion Stallion and Dutch National Champion) or Algierczyk (by Engano).

Celebes
Karmin

The second of the mentioned full-brothers was Karmin. He was born at Albigowa stud in 1952. Still in Poland he was a successful race horse (raced 17 times with 6 wins and 8 places) winning the Polish derby.
With the age of 6, Karmin was exported to Germany.

Karmin was used at Marbach as a replacement for the Polish bred stallion Wind.

Karmin left one important son, named Daikir (x Haifa). Daikir actually had no influence in the Arabian breeding program but together with his son Merafic (x Masarrah) and his grandson Dschinn (Nabuch x Dahanna) he was an important sire for the German riding ponies.

Two Karmin daughters should not be forgotten here: Dindara (x Winarsad) and Dalila (x Koratah). Latter one was used at the Arabian breeding program of the Zoo in Duisburg (producing Kaidal II by Kaisoon). Dindara was foundation mare of Om El Arab and has descendants in France and Germany through her daughter Dschesira (by Shaker El Masri).

After 15 years as broodmare in Poland, Canaria was sold to Sweden in 1962 where she gave birth to her last foal, a daughter named Cantata by the Polish stallion Litaur, born in 1963. Cantata became broodmare at the stud of Countess Lewenhaupt in Sweden. She left 14 registered foals, among them the Banat son Bataann who was a successful racing sire, exported to the U.S. in 1977.
